Road Reconstruction Sparks Debate Over Funding and Compliance

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the future of Buckman Road, focusing on the options for its rehabilitation. The project has been a point of contention since requests for improvements were first made by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) in 2020.

The primary options on the table are full depth reclamation and full depth reconstruction. Full depth reclamation, estimated at $2.3 million, involves tearing up the existing road and rebuilding it with new materials, but it does not include necessary upgrades for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In contrast, full depth reconstruction, which would cost approximately $2.5 million, would allow for slope corrections and ADA compliance.

Officials expressed concern over the funding, noting that while they have secured $2.3 million, additional funds would be necessary to cover the full reconstruction option. The discussion highlighted the urgency of the project, as costs are expected to rise if bidding is delayed until January or February.

The meeting concluded with a call for BPAC to decide whether they would prefer the less expensive reclamation option or pursue the more comprehensive reconstruction, which would better meet accessibility standards.
