Community demands action to ensure student safety at school crossing

During a recent government meeting, community safety concerns took center stage as residents voiced urgent issues regarding traffic and pedestrian safety in Alexandria.

Dominic, a parent at Emanuel Episcopal School, highlighted the dangers faced by over 70 students under the age of six who cross Russell Road daily. He pointed out the absence of a crosswalk and school crossing signs at a critical intersection, which has led to several near-miss incidents involving vehicles. Despite previous requests for improvements, no action has been taken, prompting Dominic to urge the council to prioritize the safety of these young students.

Elizabeth McGill, representing the Taylor Run Citizens Association, addressed proposed changes to the Duke Street and West Taylor Run Parkway intersection. She emphasized community opposition to the introduction of a slip lane, which residents fear would increase traffic speed and volume on local streets not designed for such conditions. McGill also raised concerns about potential flooding risks exacerbated by the proposed changes, arguing that they would undermine the city’s goals of improving quality of life and safety. She urged the council to redirect funds from the intersection redesign to address more pressing safety issues elsewhere.

The council members acknowledged the testimonies and committed to reviewing the concerns raised, with plans to follow up with the speakers for further discussion. The meeting underscored the community's call for enhanced safety measures to protect both pedestrians and residents in the face of ongoing traffic challenges.
