Community heroes save life during high school football game

In a recent Benicia Unified School District (BUSD) meeting, Superintendent Dr. Wright highlighted the heroic actions of community members and first responders who saved a life during a medical emergency at a high school football game on August 30. Dr. Wright expressed gratitude towards those who acted swiftly, performing CPR and using an AED machine, emphasizing that true heroes often emerge in ordinary circumstances. Several individuals were honored for their bravery, including Nancy Lopez and Brandon Zylka, while others, such as Liz Souza and Jason Welch, were acknowledged for their contributions despite being unable to attend.

The meeting also featured reports from Liberty High School, presented by student Kiara, who shared upcoming events, including a monthly assembly celebrating students with perfect attendance and the ongoing construction of an ofrenda for Hispanic Heritage Month. Kiara highlighted various learning opportunities for students, including tours of culinary and veterinary programs, and the revival of the \"playground pals\" initiative, fostering relationships between high school and elementary students through play.

Additionally, Dr. Wright reported on a recent gathering celebrating the history of BHS Athletics, which attracted over 400 attendees. The event honored past athletes, including Forest Molinari, a former wrestler now pursuing a career in MMA. Dr. Wright praised the contributions of alumni to society and acknowledged the efforts of community members in organizing the event, including Ron Wheat and Joan Westerman.

The meeting concluded with the announcement that Benicia High School has been named to the 2024 AP School honor roll, marking another achievement for the district.
