Town declares local emergency as tropical storm Milton approaches

The Fort Myers Beach Town Council convened to address pressing matters, including the declaration of a local state of emergency due to Tropical Storm Milton. Resolution 24-214 was unanimously approved, empowering the town manager to take necessary actions in response to the storm, including emergency purchases and enforcement of penalties for violations. This marks the fifth emergency resolution the town has enacted in recent months, following storms Adalia, Debbie, Lee, and Helene.

In addition to the emergency declaration, the council discussed the scheduling of upcoming town meetings originally set for October 7-10. Given the mandatory evacuation order and anticipated cleanup efforts, the town manager suggested rescheduling these meetings to ensure public safety and participation. Council members expressed a preference to hold an additional meeting before the next scheduled session on October 21, with discussions on potential dates falling between October 15-18.

Despite some members having prior commitments, there was a consensus on the importance of convening before the 21st to address both first and second readings on the agenda. The council is considering options for remote participation to accommodate members who may be unavailable in person.
