Controversial sanctuary proposal sparks community opposition

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around a special use permit request for a new animal sanctuary, Sanctuary to the MAX, located in the northwest portion of the county. The proposal, which has evolved from its original intent to house both felines and canines, is now focused solely on accommodating felines due to prior code enforcement violations related to the operator's personal animals.

The sanctuary's operator, Miss La Priore, is seeking to relocate from a smaller residential area to a larger agricultural property, which would allow for more space and better facilities for the animals. The new site spans approximately 5.03 acres and is situated in an area designated for agricultural use. The meeting revealed that the application had garnered significant public interest, with 117 notifications of opposition received by noon on the day of the meeting.

The planning team emphasized that the proposal adheres to the county's comprehensive plan, which includes considerations for scenic views, open space, rural lighting, transportation, and infrastructure. The staff is currently reviewing the application to ensure compliance with these regulations.

The meeting also addressed procedural matters, including the withdrawal of two items from the agenda by the applicant, and the rearrangement of discussion items to accommodate a planner who was unwell. The council encouraged attendees to stay or leave as they wished, reflecting an open and accommodating atmosphere for public participation.
