During a recent town council meeting, the Bristol Prevention Coalition presented a proclamation in support of Red Ribbon Week, scheduled from October 23rd to October 31st. Barbara Palumbo, the coalition's coordinator, emphasized the significance of the week, which honors DEA officer Enrique \"Kiki\" Camarena, who was murdered in 1985 while working undercover to combat drug trafficking.
Palumbo explained that Red Ribbon Week has been celebrated since 1988 and serves as a platform for promoting drug prevention and recovery efforts within the community. The council unanimously approved the proclamation, demonstrating their support for the coalition's initiatives.
The week will feature various activities aimed at raising awareness about drug prevention. Notable events include assemblies led by neuropsychologist and comedian Matt Bellis at local middle and high schools, the distribution of tulip bulbs as a symbol of a drug-free promise, and a community-wide \"Wear Red Day\" on October 25th. Additionally, the Bristol Police Department will host a drug take-back event on October 26th and participate in a Halloween Walkabout on October 27th.
The coalition is also planning an open-to-the-public training session to conclude the week, further engaging the community in its prevention efforts. The council's support and the planned activities reflect a strong commitment to fostering a drug-free environment in Bristol.
