Community rallies for inclusive playground design and funding

During a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the development of an adaptive playground at Marathon Elementary School, a project approved by town meeting in May 2024. The initiative, funded through Community Preservation Committee (CPC) resources, aims to create an inclusive play space accessible to children of all abilities.

The adaptive playground committee, formed to oversee the project, has been collaborating with the design firm Beta to gather community input and finalize design elements. After evaluating 198 town-owned parcels, the committee selected the site behind Marathon Elementary School, which will accommodate both the playground and necessary green space for physical education classes.

The design process began in July, with a series of meetings scheduled to address site selection, landscape analysis, and design concepts. The committee is currently reviewing early design ideas, with construction documents expected to be ready by November.

Key features of the adaptive playground will include ramps, accessible paths, and ground-level play areas, ensuring a sensory-rich environment that promotes social interaction among children. Proposed elements include various types of swings, slides, climbing structures, and sensory paths, as well as quiet spaces for retreat.

The project aims to foster an inclusive atmosphere where children can play together, regardless of their abilities, and is set to be submitted for further funding consideration by the CPC. The community's involvement in the design process underscores the commitment to creating a playground that meets the needs of all local families.
