Daycare expansion proposal sparks traffic and safety concerns

In a recent government meeting, board members approved a use variance for a new dormitory project, allowing for 26 total occupants, including 20 students and six chaperone spaces. The motion for a ten-year approval was unanimously supported by the board, highlighting a collaborative effort to address community needs.

The meeting also addressed a request from a local daycare center seeking to increase its capacity from 70 to 150 children per shift. The applicant, Perminder Kaleka, outlined plans to extend operations from 6 AM to midnight, accommodating children from infancy to age 13. However, the Department of Public Works raised significant concerns regarding traffic flow, parking availability, and the overall operational plan. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan that includes details on vehicle movements, loading and unloading procedures, and safe access for foot traffic.

The board noted that the daycare's previous request for 195 children was denied due to insufficient play space, but the current proposal appears to meet the necessary requirements. Nonetheless, the Department of Public Works requested that the matter be adjourned until the applicant can provide a revised operational plan and site layout that addresses traffic management and architectural details.
