Students Lead Charge for Voter Empowerment and Engagement

In a recent meeting of the Crowley Independent School District (CISD) Board, significant strides were reported in student voter empowerment initiatives aimed at enhancing civic engagement among youth. Dr. McFarland and Mr. Ham Mohammed presented updates on the district's collaboration with the YMCA to introduce a \"Youth and Government\" program in middle schools, emphasizing the importance of student involvement in the legislative process.

The meeting highlighted the achievements of the Student Voter Empowerment Clubs (SVEC), which have been instrumental in increasing voter registration and awareness among high school students. Jessica Lugo, program manager for the initiative, noted that in the 2023-2024 school year, SVEC members successfully registered 22% of the senior class at Crowley and North Crowley High Schools. This effort included in-class presentations that significantly boosted students' confidence in their voting knowledge—from 27% feeling prepared to participate in elections to a marked increase after the program.

Misty Wilder, representing the Fort Worth Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., shared that their partnership with CISD has led to the registration of 41 students on National Voter Registration Day. Wilder emphasized the importance of educating students about the voting process and encouraging them to create voting plans ahead of the upcoming elections.

Students from the SVEC took the stage to discuss their initiatives, including hosting voter registration tables at school events and organizing a \"March to the Polls\" to foster excitement around voting. They expressed their commitment to not only register peers but also to engage family and community members in the electoral process.
