Seniors rally after Zumba class cancellation sparks outrage

Seniors at the Elwin Mussel Senior Center expressed their frustration during a recent government meeting regarding the cancellation of Zumba Gold and Chiropics Health classes. The uproar began in July when participants received an email stating their instructor was no longer available to teach, coinciding with a fee increase from $20 to $44 for classes.

Attendees voiced their concerns at a Prop 2 meeting, where emotions ran high, with some seniors reportedly in tears over the situation. They criticized the Recreation and Parks Department for their handling of the matter, alleging harassment of the instructor and a lack of compassion from officials Angela and Dennis, who dismissed seniors' concerns about the budget.

Despite the turmoil, the community rallied around their instructor, Kathleen, who was recognized as Senior Worker of the Year in Santa Barbara County. Although she felt uncomfortable returning to the center, she facilitated a temporary solution, allowing classes to be held at Saint Peter's Church for two weeks before transitioning to Crunch Fitness, which welcomed the seniors with open arms.

Participants expressed gratitude to Crunch Fitness for accommodating their needs and to senior nutrition services for their flexibility in scheduling meals. However, many attendees questioned the senior center's commitment to its mission of providing a supportive environment for seniors, suggesting that recent events have undermined that goal.
