Residents demand action on mobile home rent stabilization

Residents of Rancho Buena Vista Mobile Estates voiced significant concerns during the recent Santa Maria city council meeting regarding the challenges faced by mobile home residents in an unregulated rental market. Representing the North Santa Barbara County Manufactured Homeowners Team, a resident highlighted the inadequacies of the current model lease program, which has failed to protect homeowner equity and ensure affordable housing.

The speaker emphasized the urgent need for improved rent stabilization measures, noting that efforts to address these issues have been ongoing since a council motion passed in June 2022. Assistant City Manager Wu is reportedly facilitating community outreach meetings to further discuss these matters.

A critical point raised was the inappropriate conversion of senior mobile home parks, specifically referencing the recent sale of Del Cielo Mobile Estates. The new owners' decision to convert the park into an all-age community was made without consulting the approximately 33,100 senior residents, prompting local residents to seek a moratorium on such conversions until protective measures can be established, similar to those enacted in Ventura County.

Additionally, the resident called for increased transparency regarding ongoing negotiations between the city and firefighters, expressing frustration over a five-month impasse without mediation. The speaker urged the council to clarify the situation to the public, emphasizing the need for a suitable compromise.
