NAMI Spokane launches innovative text line for mental health support

In a recent meeting, Chantelle, the executive director of NAMI Spokane, provided an update on the organization's resource navigator program, which aims to assist community members in navigating mental health resources. The program, inspired by her previous work in domestic violence advocacy, has seen significant success since its inception three years ago.

Chantelle highlighted the program's accessibility, noting that anyone in the community can reach out for support, regardless of their connection to existing services. The organization has recently welcomed a new staff member, Lillian, who brings valuable experience from her previous role with the 988 hotline. Since Lillian's arrival, NAMI Spokane has reported an increase in the number of individuals served, with 39 more people reached in just one month compared to the previous year.

In an effort to engage a younger demographic, NAMI Spokane launched a text line on June 28, which has already received inquiries from eight individuals seeking support. The organization is also working on enhancing its online presence by introducing a live chat option on its website and creating more accessible informational materials.

Chantelle discussed plans for expanding family programming, including partnerships with local agencies like MultiCare to offer support groups on-site. Additionally, NAMI Spokane is redesigning its curriculum to better meet the needs of the Spokane community and is preparing to launch a new educational course aimed at helping local businesses respond to mental health crises.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on further outreach efforts and the importance of collaboration with other organizations to ensure comprehensive support for individuals facing mental health challenges.
