Parents Demand Action for Safer Schools Amid COVID Crisis

During a recent Board of Education meeting, parents and community members voiced critical concerns regarding the challenges faced by schools and the importance of parental involvement in enhancing student performance.

One parent representative highlighted the significant impact of the Parent University program, which has fostered a welcoming environment for families at Clemente School. She expressed gratitude for the support provided through various workshops, including English, nutrition, and technology, which empower parents to better assist their children’s education. The speaker urged the Board to continue expanding these services, emphasizing their role in building a strong community despite ongoing adversities.

Another parent, Sarah Miranda from CICS West Belden, shared her experiences as a member of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). She pointed out the disparities in enrichment programs available to students, advocating for equitable funding for all public schools, including charter schools. Miranda stressed that programs in music, sports, and technology are essential for nurturing creativity and preparing students for future challenges, particularly in an era increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.

The meeting also addressed health and safety concerns related to COVID-19. A speaker criticized the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for not implementing stricter health protocols, arguing that current practices do not adequately protect students from the virus. Citing studies that show schools as significant contributors to community COVID prevalence, the speaker called for mandatory masking and improved air quality measures to ensure a safer learning environment.

The discussions underscored the urgent need for increased parental engagement and equitable funding for educational programs, as well as heightened safety measures in schools to protect students' health.
