City boosts police and firefighter salaries to attract talent

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the successful implementation of a new pay plan aimed at attracting and retaining talent within the city workforce. Approved in July 2022 and implemented in January 2023, the pay plan has significantly increased salaries for various city employees, particularly in the police and fire departments.

Before the pay plan, starting salaries for police officers were approximately $46,000, leading to 18 vacancies within the department. Following the pay plan's implementation, starting salaries rose to around $55,000, resulting in a reduction of vacancies to just seven. Similarly, firefighters saw their salaries increase from $43,000 to over $50,000, while groundskeepers' pay rose from $31,000 to about $39,000.

City officials also highlighted the continuation of the \"pay for full performance\" initiative, which rewards employees for their contributions. Additionally, despite the rising costs of health insurance premiums that often burden employees, the city managed to absorb these increases without passing any additional costs onto its workforce.

This strategic approach to employee compensation reflects the city's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the labor market while ensuring the well-being of its employees.
