Firefighters demand fair wages amid staffing crisis

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the starting wages for firefighters and the need for a structured wage progression plan. Current starting rates for various positions were outlined, with Crestview at $1,606, Ocean City at $1,665, Destin at $1,928, Okaloosa Island at $1,983, and South Walters at $2,018. The local fire department's starting wage stands at $1,338, which translates to just below $14 an hour for a firefighter.

The meeting highlighted the urgency for a comprehensive wage proposal to ensure competitive salaries for firefighters. Concerns were raised about the retention of experienced personnel, with reports of staff leaving for higher-paying opportunities elsewhere.
