Erie County launches ambitious climate action plan for equity

In a recent government meeting, officials from Erie County highlighted their proactive approach to addressing climate change through a comprehensive Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP). The initiative, which began with a climate vulnerability assessment in 2019, aims to protect the community from the increasing threats posed by extreme weather events linked to climate change.

County Executive Josh emphasized the importance of the plan in promoting justice and safeguarding vulnerable populations. He noted that the county's efforts are not only focused on mitigation but also on enhancing resilience against climate impacts. The CCAP was developed over an 18-month period with the involvement of approximately 100 volunteers and 70 public meetings, resulting in a collaborative effort that reflects community input and priorities.

Dr. Susan Clark, chair of the Climate Change Task Force, elaborated on the plan's structure, which includes ten working groups addressing various sectors related to climate action. The plan, released in December 2022 and unanimously adopted by the legislature in February 2023, incorporates equity as a core principle, ensuring that the needs of disadvantaged communities are prioritized.

The meeting also showcased the tangible outcomes of the CCAP, including a recent grant award of $5.2 million aimed at improving the tree canopy in underserved areas. This funding was made possible through the partnerships and collaborative efforts established during the plan's development.
