During a recent government meeting, Commissioner Jacobs requested an overview of pending litigation involving the town. The discussion highlighted several lawsuits currently being handled by the town's insurance defense carrier, Johnson and Selmo, specifically by attorney Chris Stearns.
Among the notable cases is a lawsuit filed by former HR director Bavette Friedman, who has submitted a second amended complaint in federal court. Discovery is ongoing in this matter. Another significant case involves former town attorney Melissa Anderson, which is pending in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Broward County, also with discovery in progress.
Additionally, a slip and fall lawsuit has been filed by Josephine Otero, stemming from an incident at one of the town's parks related to a storm grate. This case was initiated on May 19 and is similarly covered by the town's insurance policy.
The meeting also addressed recent settlements. A claim by former employee Mr. McKine was settled for $5,000, with the payment made by the Florida League of Cities' insurance defense carrier, ensuring no out-of-pocket costs for the town. Another settlement involved a case against Miss Ramirez, which encompassed both a federal lawsuit and an EEOC complaint, also resolved through the town's insurance.
Furthermore, the commission was informed that a code lien foreclosure lawsuit against Gerald Anderson and A&B Recycling has been finalized, with the complaint now ready for action. Overall, the town's legal matters are being managed effectively through its insurance coverage, minimizing financial impact on the municipality.
