Housing projects transform lives for veterans and small businesses

Housing and Neighborhood Services is actively managing two significant projects aimed at improving living conditions for vulnerable populations in the community. The first initiative is the renovation of the Oak Street apartment complex, which provides housing for veterans experiencing homelessness. Out of the 22 units, 20 required renovations, which have included the replacement of windows, flooring, cabinets, and the installation of new showers and kitchens. Additionally, improvements to heating and cooling systems and a new roof are part of the project. This renovation is being funded through a combination of local resources and community development block grant funds.

The second project involves the Peach Tree Canyon Apartments, which is set to close next week. This development will consist of 144 units in its first phase, and following the closing, a groundbreaking ceremony will take place, allowing for the commencement of funding expenditures.

In a related discussion, Selena Morales from Economic Development announced that the City of Las Cruces has allocated $400,000 from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support small businesses through the Storefront Repair Grant Program. This initiative aims to aid businesses that have suffered property damage due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant covers repair costs and reimburses business owners for expenses up to $2,500. To date, $138,908 has been spent, benefiting 83 businesses, with remaining funds available until depleted or by December 31, 2026.

Irene Parra from Workforce Development provided updates on various ARPA workforce development projects, indicating that agreements were finalized in June and that efforts are underway to allocate awards for these initiatives. The focus remains on enhancing economic recovery and support for the community through these targeted programs.
