Housing initiative targets historically marginalized communities for equity

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed ongoing housing projects aimed at addressing the needs of historically marginalized populations. The conversation also touched on the importance of targeting services for specific populations, particularly those affected by homelessness. Officials acknowledged the need for careful adherence to fair housing laws while exploring partnerships that focus on providing tailored services. For instance, a collaboration with Brothers Redevelopment aims to support individuals with traumatic brain injuries.

In response to inquiries about strategies for better serving Black communities, which are overrepresented in homelessness statistics, officials noted the implementation of programs like the Metro Down Payment Assistance (DPA) program. This initiative is designed to assist residents in historically redlined neighborhoods, facilitating their return to these areas.

Additionally, a new prioritization policy, effective July 1, mandates that 30% of units in new developments funded by the Housing Opportunity and Support Team (HOST) must be allocated to historically disadvantaged populations. This policy aims to reintegrate individuals with historical ties to the city and those with disabilities into their communities.

While officials were unable to provide specific figures on the density added through partnerships since HOST's inception, they expressed a commitment to follow up on this data. The discussions underscored a proactive approach to housing equity and the ongoing efforts to address systemic disparities in access to housing resources.
