The Clearwater Affordable Housing Advisory Committee convened for its first meeting of the year, focusing on the pressing issue of housing affordability in the city. Led by Amanda Warner, a planner from Wade Trim, the committee aims to identify strategies to reduce barriers to affordable housing development.
During the meeting, committee members introduced themselves, highlighting their diverse backgrounds in housing services, mortgage lending, and nonprofit development. Robin Phelan, the committee chair, emphasized the importance of their work, noting her extensive experience in affordable housing and down payment assistance programs.
The committee operates under the requirements of the state’s affordable housing grant program, established by Florida legislation in 2007. Following a change in 2020, the committee is now mandated to meet annually, providing recommendations to the city council on local housing policies and strategies.
Warner outlined the committee's schedule, which includes monthly meetings from September to December, culminating in a public hearing on December 3rd. This meeting will focus on recommending approval of the local housing incentive strategy report, which must be submitted to the state by December 31st. The committee's work is crucial in shaping Clearwater's approach to affordable housing, ensuring that strategies are in place to support the community's needs while maintaining property value appreciation.
