Boulder Creek launches ambitious Complete Streets project

The Highway 9 Boulder Creek Complete Streets Project is set to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists in Boulder Creek, a community in the Santa Cruz Mountains. During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the project's current phase, which focuses on project approval and environmental documentation.

Key objectives of the project include filling gaps in the existing sidewalk network, implementing traffic calming measures, and improving facilities for bicycles and public transit. The proposed infrastructure improvements will feature continuous sidewalks, curb extensions, crosswalk striping, and center islands to enhance pedestrian visibility and reduce vehicle speeds along the busy corridor.

The project is being developed in cooperation with Caltrans, which will oversee environmental document review and quality management. The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) is the project sponsor, managing the schedule, scope, and budget, as well as community outreach efforts.

In April, RTC staff selected HMH Engineers as the consultant for the project, with a contract valued at $1,337,216, funded by a federal earmark of $1.5 million. The RTC has recommended authorizing the executive director to negotiate a cooperative agreement with Caltrans and to award the engineering services contract to HMH Engineers.

This initiative aims to significantly improve the infrastructure in Boulder Creek, making it safer and more accessible for all users.
