Budget discussions heat up as city tackles firefighter staffing crisis

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the potential for a referendum regarding funding for public safety positions, including firefighters and police officers. The conversation highlighted the complexities surrounding the funding mechanisms, particularly in relation to the expiration of Tax Increment Districts (TIDs) and how they affect levy limits.

City officials are considering presenting multiple questions on the ballot, allowing voters to decide on the continuation of funding for various positions. Currently, the city has added 12 firefighters through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, but recruitment challenges have left the department short-staffed, with only 68 of the targeted 74 firefighters currently hired.

Alder Gibson raised concerns about the timeline for ARPA funding, noting that if the positions are not funded through ARPA, they would need to be included in the already tight 2025 budget. The committee agreed to prepare a budget modification for the next meeting to address the allocation of approximately $341,000 needed for the firefighter positions.

Additionally, three new firefighters are expected to join the department soon, pending background checks and testing. The meeting concluded with plans to continue discussions on the referendum and budget modifications in future sessions.
