City Council enacts strict ban on public camping

During a recent council meeting in Brixville, Florida, significant legislative measures were discussed, including the second readings of two ordinances aimed at addressing public camping and wastewater management.

The council unanimously passed Ordinance 987, which prohibits public camping or sleeping on any public property, buildings, or rights of way. This ordinance is a response to House Bill 1365, which mandates local governments to take action against public camping to prevent situations similar to those seen in California. Council member Haley, who authored the ordinance, emphasized the need for compliance with the state statute before the October 1, 2024 deadline. In addition, the council addressed Ordinance 986, which introduces a temporary moratorium on new wastewater connections. This measure is crucial to prevent the city from exceeding its permitted wastewater discharge limits, as outlined by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Council member Hanley highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the city had received requests for capacity that far exceeded available resources.
