City Council Approves Final Extension for Controversial Development Project

In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed a time extension request for the Monte annexation and 101151 lot single-family residential subdivision project, originally approved in March 2019. The applicant is seeking a final one-year extension, which would push the expiration date to September 11, 2025. This request follows a series of previous extensions, including a two-year extension granted in March 2020 and another one-year extension requested in December 2022, which was ultimately withdrawn due to an automatic extension provided by AB 1561.

The applicant cited challenges in securing buyers, with three potential purchasers backing out due to COVID-related market uncertainties and rising interest rates. The extension is deemed necessary to continue marketing the property to developers and to prepare a final map for recording.

City staff expressed support for the extension, noting that the only revised condition is the updated expiration date. The applicant, Deborah, co-owner of the project, emphasized the importance of maintaining the timeline and shared the project's lengthy history, which dates back to 2004. The planning commission is expected to recommend the city council approve the extension, allowing the project to move forward amidst ongoing market challenges.
