Residents demand halt to controversial Hap Road project

During a recent village board meeting, residents voiced significant concerns regarding the proposed Hap Road corridor project, prompting calls for a reassessment of the current plans. Alicia Bellar, a local resident, presented a petition with nearly 100 signatures from community members urging the village board and the Cook County Department of Transportation to pause all work on the project. The petition advocates for a new analysis that incorporates resident and business input, ultimately suggesting that any revised plan should be put to a referendum.

Erica Block, a planner with extensive local government experience, emphasized the need for more parking in the Village Center Business District, arguing that removing parking spaces to enhance landscaping would negatively impact local businesses. She proposed alternative traffic calming measures that would not compromise parking availability.

Anne Hines, co-owner of 3 Tarts Bakery, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the struggles customers face in finding parking and warning that the proposed removal of spaces could harm business viability during the anticipated nine-month construction period.

The meeting also saw criticism directed at board member Todd Fowler, with a resident calling for his recusal from discussions related to the project due to perceived conflicts of interest. The public comment period allowed for a range of opinions, indicating a strong community desire for more thoughtful planning and engagement in the development process.
