Westminster Schools Launch Major Suicide Prevention Initiative

In a recent meeting of the Westminster Public Schools Board of Education, significant strides in mental health awareness and suicide prevention were highlighted, coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day. The board celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program, which originated in Westminster and has expanded its reach across various states, including Kansas and New Mexico.

Dale, a representative of the program, emphasized the importance of community engagement, noting that their initiatives have been implemented in every elementary school within the Washington DC Public School District. He shared that the program continues to grow, with recent inquiries from a television station and a university in Bridal seeking to adopt similar measures.

The board officially proclaimed September 8 through 14 as Yellow Ribbon Suicide Awareness and Prevention Week, urging citizens to wear yellow ribbons and promote awareness about the critical issue of youth suicide. The proclamation highlighted alarming statistics, noting that Colorado ranks sixth in the nation for suicide deaths, with significant impacts on young people aged 15 to 24.

The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between the board and the Yellow Ribbon program, with members expressing gratitude for the resources and support provided to the community. The board reiterated its commitment to raising awareness and providing assistance to those in need, reinforcing the message that it is acceptable to seek help.
