Allegheny County declares Digital Inclusion Week to bridge divide

During a recent Allegheny County Council meeting, a significant proclamation was made declaring the week of October 7 through 11, 2024, as Digital Inclusion Week. Council member Bethany Hallam presented the proclamation, emphasizing the critical role of affordable internet access in promoting civic engagement, lifelong learning, and access to essential services.

The proclamation highlighted the stark reality of the digital divide, particularly affecting racially and ethnically diverse communities. It noted that nearly half of those who are digitally disconnected are people of color, with 24.3% of Pennsylvania's population not using the internet—higher than the national average of 19.5%. Furthermore, it was pointed out that 48 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties are rural, facing significant challenges in accessing broadband services.

The meeting underscored the importance of digital equity as a determinant of health, linking lack of internet access to higher COVID-19 mortality rates. Additionally, it was noted that digital skills are essential for career advancement and economic growth.

The proclamation also recognized the collaborative efforts of various organizations, including the University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, in fostering digital equity through training programs and access to technology. Council member Hallam encouraged residents to participate in raising awareness about digital equity and the importance of closing the digital divide in the community.
