Hurricane threat looms as storm surge predictions rise

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the impending storm and its potential impacts on Collier County, emphasizing the need for preparedness as heavy rains and a significant storm surge are anticipated. The stormwater management team has been actively monitoring conditions, and officials warned that saturated soils could exacerbate flooding risks.

The National Hurricane Center has predicted a storm surge of 4 to 7 feet, with some estimates reaching as high as 9 feet in certain areas. Officials urged residents to be aware of their evacuation zones, particularly Zones A and B, which are at higher risk for flooding. Zone A aligns with US 41 and the western areas, while Zone B encompasses the Naples Bay and Gordon River regions, known for previous localized flooding.

As the storm approaches, officials highlighted the importance of not solely focusing on the storm's cone of uncertainty but rather preparing for potential impacts from the storm's outer bands. They noted that tornado watches and warnings could also be issued as the storm progresses.

The meeting underscored the necessity for residents to have a clear evacuation plan, with a recommended clearance time of 10 to 12 hours from the issuance of evacuation notices to the arrival of tropical storm-force winds.
