Town launches Hometown Heroes banner program for veterans

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed several community projects aimed at honoring local veterans and enhancing public spaces. A key initiative is the \"Hometown Heroes\" program, which will feature decorative banners honoring military personnel. The plan includes the installation of up to 36 banners on decorative posts throughout the town, with an estimated project cost of $25,100. The banners are set to be displayed from Memorial Day through July 31, with applications opening from December 1 to January 15. The announcement for this initiative is planned for the Veterans Day celebration on November 11.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the need for improvements at Veterans Park, which has been identified as a central hub for community celebrations. Officials discussed the potential for a park refresh, including the removal of a broken bench and the installation of new landscaping and seating options. Three vendors were approached for bids, with Melbourne Landscape providing the most comprehensive proposal, which includes ADA-compliant pathways and various landscaping enhancements.

The Parks Board is recommending these projects to the town commission for consideration, emphasizing the importance of honoring veterans while improving community spaces. Public comments on these initiatives will be invited at the conclusion of the presentation.
