Health officials oppose liquor store near addiction treatment center

In a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding a proposed liquor store near Tanner Health System's facilities, particularly the Willowbrook Counseling and Psychiatric Centers. Gary Thomas, Vice President for Campus and Support Services at Tanner Health, expressed strong opposition to the development, citing potential negative impacts on patients recovering from substance abuse and mental health issues.

Thomas highlighted that the proximity of a liquor store to the counseling center, which has been operational since 2016, could undermine the recovery efforts of individuals seeking treatment. He noted that the center serves a vulnerable population, including those in crisis, and emphasized that the visibility of a liquor store could serve as a temptation for patients immediately after their counseling sessions.

The meeting also featured input from representatives of the Birches, an assisted living community, and Lifegate Church, both of which are located near the proposed site. Concerns were echoed about the potential for the liquor store to disrupt the professional atmosphere of the area, which currently consists mainly of medical and professional offices.

Thomas pointed out that the Willowbrook Psychiatric Center, which has been in operation since 2017, recorded over 17,000 patient visits last year, underscoring the importance of maintaining a supportive environment for those seeking help. He argued that the establishment of a liquor store would not only pose a public nuisance but could also jeopardize the health and well-being of their clients.

The planning commission is expected to consider these concerns as they deliberate on the request for the liquor store, with Tanner Health System formally requesting a denial of the proposal. The outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for the community's approach to mental health and substance abuse treatment.
