Community divided over proposed residential development plans

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a proposal for two single-family detached residences located on Chartell Avenue, which has sparked both support and opposition from local residents. The project, which aims to comply with existing guidelines requiring garage access from an alley, has undergone revisions based on feedback from a previous meeting in July.

The revised design includes an alley-access garage for the northern unit, while the southern unit will utilize a driveway from Chartell Avenue. The southern unit's driveway has been adjusted to fit the 20-foot lot size, aligning with new ADA access requirements and providing space for landscaping and privacy fencing along property lines.

Despite these modifications, concerns were raised by local residents, particularly from Bill Bleakley, a member of the SOSA Neighborhood Association. Bleakley presented the board's opposition to the application, arguing that the project should be evaluated within the broader context of urban design principles rather than solely on regulatory compliance. He emphasized the need for coordinated development that fosters community stability and identity.

The commission is set to consider these perspectives as they move forward with the approval process, with public input remaining a critical component of the decision-making. The applicant is also present to address any questions or concerns from the commission and the community.
