City plans major water infrastructure upgrades amid corrosion concerns

During a recent government meeting, city officials discussed critical infrastructure updates, particularly concerning the replacement of brackets on a bridge and the condition of a water tank.

The conversation began with a clarification regarding the replacement of the water main across a bridge leading to Highway 11. Officials clarified that the focus is not on the water main itself but rather on the brackets that support it. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is overseeing a project that necessitates the replacement of these brackets with high-grade stainless steel due to the failure of the existing coated steel brackets. City engineers have been collaborating with ODOT to ensure the project proceeds smoothly, although there may be a need to hire a contractor to meet the tight timeline set by ODOT.

Additionally, the meeting addressed concerns about corrosion in the south water tank, which has been highlighted in a recent rate study. While the tank is currently filled with water for firefighting purposes, it is not being used for potable water. Officials noted that the interior tar coating of the tank is deteriorating, raising the possibility of a full replacement. However, they indicated that the existing pad and piping could still be utilized, as the tank itself dates back to the early 1970s and is likely due for an upgrade.
