Wilmington Council approves police funding amid reform concerns

During a recent Wilmington City Council meeting, members approved a resolution authorizing the Wilmington Police Department to apply for a grant of $91,312 from the Special Law Enforcement Assistance Fund. The funds are earmarked for purchasing a trailer for the disposal of ammunition and fireworks, as well as for FARO training for the police department's traffic and forensic services unit, and motorcycle helmets.

However, Council Member Darby expressed her concerns regarding ongoing police funding without substantial discussions on police reform. She indicated her intention to vote present on this resolution, emphasizing the need for a more comprehensive dialogue on police reform in future sessions.

In addition to the police funding resolution, the council adopted a resolution related to the Community Development Block Grant program, which included amendments to increase funding for a down payment assistance program for first-time homeowners and additional support for the Ministry of Caring's project on North Market Street. This project aims to provide two-bedroom apartments to accommodate seniors and caregivers.

Furthermore, the council introduced an ordinance to amend city code to allow for the cultivation, manufacture, testing, and retail of recreational marijuana in designated commercial and manufacturing zones. This ordinance will be referred to the planning commission for further consideration.

The meeting concluded with a vote tally showing 11 members in favor of the police funding resolution, one present, and one absent, while the community development resolution received nine votes in favor, two present, and two absent.
