Police Department Secures Major Grant to Combat Violent Crime

During a recent government meeting, the council discussed two significant resolutions aimed at enhancing local law enforcement's capabilities through state grant funding.

The first resolution pertains to the police department's application for a grant from the Delaware Emergency Illegal Drug Enforcement Program, which would provide $33,706.80 to support drug investigations and anti-violence initiatives. The funding is intended to cover overtime costs for officers involved in these efforts, particularly in response to community complaints and tips received during local meetings. Notably, this grant does not require any local matching funds, making it a financially viable option for the department.

Councilman Oliver expressed his support for the resolution, highlighting the need for additional funding for overtime in his district, especially in light of recent shootings. He requested to be added as a cosponsor, a sentiment echoed by Councilman Mills, who also sought cosponsorship.

The second resolution discussed was a grant application to the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security Fund, aimed at combating violent crime. The police department is eligible for $402,901.40 in funding, which would similarly cover overtime costs for officers engaged in proactive patrols in high-violence areas. This initiative also does not require matching funds.

Councilwoman Oliver again voiced her support, emphasizing the importance of securing funding to combat crime effectively. Both resolutions are set to be presented to the full council on October 3rd, reflecting a concerted effort to bolster public safety through strategic funding opportunities.
