Community celebrates new media center and mural revival

During a recent government meeting, officials provided updates on the renovation of the building located at 520 South Washington, highlighting significant progress in the project. The asbestos abatement has been completed, and interior demolition is now 95% finished. The media center is expected to relocate to the renovated facility next year, which aims to enhance community engagement with its services.

In addition to the renovation updates, officials announced plans to generate excitement for the project, which is set to open in fall 2026. A key component of this initiative includes the return of a mural that previously adorned the old Lansing Public Media Center. The original mural, created during the Below the Stacks Festival in 2019, was a source of inspiration for many before the building was demolished. The same artist has been commissioned to create a new, larger mural on the south wall of the 520 building, with completion expected by the end of the week.

The meeting also included discussions on financial aspects of the project, with further details to be provided by a designated speaker. Renderings and floor plans were shared to illustrate the design and functionality of the new space, which aims to serve as a community hub. The temporary location at 318 North Capitol remains operational until the new facility is ready.
