Speed Limit Debate Sparks Action from Local Board

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed a resident's request for a speed limit reduction on Ellie Road. Initially, the resident sought to lower the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph, later revising the request to 35 mph. The board acknowledged the need for a formal procedure to handle such requests, emphasizing that a speed study must be conducted before any changes can be made.

The board noted that there is currently no speed study on Ellie Road, which is essential to determine if speeding is a widespread issue. They agreed to reach out to law enforcement to see if any preliminary speed enforcement data is available. The sheriff's office previously conducted radar studies, indicating that most speeds recorded were between 45 and 55 mph.

To move forward, the board voted to direct staff to request a speed study from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). This request will involve collaboration with the sheriff's department to gather necessary data. The board expects that VDOT will provide recommendations based on the findings of the speed study.

In addition to the speed limit discussion, the board also confirmed plans for a Christmas luncheon on December 13, which will be held at the firehouse from 12 PM to 2 PM. The event is being organized with the assistance of former board member Miss Hoffman, who has agreed to help with the planning.
