Housing Crisis Hits Midwest as Demand Surges in East Lansing

During a recent government meeting, Ryan Kilpatrick, founder and CEO of Flywheel Community Development Services, shared insights on housing challenges and economic development in West Michigan. With over 18 years of experience in public facilitation and planning, Kilpatrick emphasized the importance of addressing housing as a core economic issue, particularly in rapidly growing areas like Kent and Ottawa Counties.

Kilpatrick, who also founded the nonprofit Housing Next, highlighted the unique demographic shifts in West Michigan, which has seen significant population growth compared to other regions in Michigan. He noted that while East Lansing has experienced a decline in population over the past two decades, the changing dynamics of household sizes—dropping from an average of four people per home to about two and a half—indicate a need for more housing options.

He urged community members to engage in upcoming discussions, particularly an event scheduled for September 30, where critical decisions regarding the master plan will be made. Kilpatrick encouraged attendees to share their perspectives and challenge his insights, fostering a collaborative environment to address local housing needs.

The meeting underscored a broader national trend, with estimates suggesting a shortage of between 3 to 4.5 million housing units across the United States, a crisis that has begun to affect Midwestern states more acutely. Kilpatrick's presentation aimed to equip community members with knowledge and strategies to tackle these pressing housing issues effectively.
