Community advocates push for preservation of Gullah heritage

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced their concerns and aspirations regarding the preservation of local character and the Gullah community's cultural significance on Hilton Head Island. Residents emphasized the importance of maintaining the natural beauty of neighborhoods like Forest Beach, highlighting the role of trees in sustaining the island's ecosystem.

Ty Scott, an advocate for the Gullah community, urged officials to consider previous studies that reflect the community's needs rather than wants. He stressed the necessity for sustainable land use and the preservation of cultural practices, including the ability to operate businesses on their properties. Scott called for the transfer of development rights to enhance density and support the community's economic viability, referencing past successful initiatives like the Hudson's property development.

The meeting also addressed the need for improved common open spaces. Participants discussed the inadequacy of current regulations, which often classify unusable areas like lagoons as open space. Recommendations included redefining open space to ensure it is functional and accessible, increasing overall open space requirements from 16% to potentially 20%, and extending these requirements to multifamily and commercial developments.

Council members expressed enthusiasm for these proposals, viewing them as steps toward better planning and preservation of the island's character. The discussion highlighted a collective commitment to fostering a sustainable and culturally rich environment for both current residents and future generations.
