City plans innovative connection to medical district

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered on enhancing connectivity between the Ashley Riverwalk and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) district. The focus was on creating a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly route that would alleviate the need for residents of West Ashley, particularly those working in the medical district, to rely on cars or navigate existing bridges.

City officials outlined a proposed pathway that would lead from the city marina to a crosswalk equipped with traffic lights near a local variety store. This route would then connect to Lockwood Boulevard and ultimately to Calhoun Street, where ongoing road safety audits and improvements for cyclists and pedestrians are planned. Although the proposed route is described as somewhat indirect, it has received support from MUSC, which is also developing plans for an innovation district centered on Calhoun Street.

Concerns were raised regarding the potential elimination of a slip lane crossing, which advocates argue is essential for maintaining accessibility. However, officials noted that retaining this crossing could significantly reduce available funding for the proposed extension. The discussions reflect a broader initiative to improve urban infrastructure and promote alternative transportation methods in the city.
