Adoption hearings highlight family bonds and legal battles

The Humphreys County Chancery Court convened recently under the presiding Judge David Wolf, addressing several significant cases, including two adoption petitions and various estate matters.

In the first case, the court approved the adoption of Samuel Anderson Story by his great-grandmother, Deborah Ann Harper. Testimonies revealed that Samuel had been living with Harper since he was three months old, and both the guardian ad litem and the court found that terminating the parental rights of his biological parents was in the child's best interest. Judge Wolf emphasized the legal implications of the adoption, stating it would establish Harper as Samuel's legal mother.

The second adoption case involved Lisa Lee Hunt, who sought to be adopted by her stepfather, Robert Masters. The court heard from both Hunt and her biological mother, who expressed their support for the adoption. Hunt confirmed her minimal contact with her biological father and expressed her desire for Masters to be recognized as her father legally. The court granted the adoption, reinforcing the familial bond established over the years.

In addition to the adoption cases, the court addressed several estate matters, including the administration of estates for deceased individuals. Notably, the estate of Charles Prophet was discussed, where the administrator sought permission to sell real estate, and the court granted the motion after confirming the heirs' consent. Other estate cases involved discussions about small estates, with the court guiding petitioners on how to proceed with asset transfers and estate openings.
