YouthWorks fights to save emergency shelter for youth

During a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding proposed budget cuts to essential community services in Fargo, particularly affecting the YouthWorks emergency shelter and the Downtown Engagement Center.

The Executive Director of YouthWorks highlighted the critical role the emergency shelter plays in the community, emphasizing its operation for over a decade. The shelter, which provides 24/7 support for at-risk youth, requires a substantial annual budget of $425,000, with the City of Fargo contributing $41,200. The Director noted that over 50% of the placements in 2023 have come from the Fargo Police Department, underscoring the shelter's importance in addressing youth homelessness and mental health crises. The Director urged city officials to reconsider any cuts, stressing the shelter's role in preventing youth from becoming homeless as they transition to adulthood.

Additionally, Kimberly Campanian, a local resident, expressed her concerns about potential funding reductions for the Downtown Engagement Center. While she acknowledged her limited knowledge of the city budget, she emphasized the importance of maintaining support for community services that address local needs.
