Students demand urgent action on school safety measures

During a recent Kent School District board meeting, a student expressed deep concerns regarding school safety, particularly in light of frequent lockdowns. The student recounted their experiences, highlighting a troubling incident where a groundskeeper was unaware of a lockdown due to wearing hearing protection while mowing the lawn. This raised alarms about the effectiveness of communication systems for all staff during emergencies. The student urged the board to implement better notification systems to ensure the safety of all employees on campus.

In addition to safety concerns, the board recognized several important observances. Director Clark proclaimed the week of October 16-20, 2024, as America's Safe Schools Week, emphasizing the need for secure learning environments free from violence and fear. The board also proclaimed October 21-25, 2024, as National School Bus Safety Week, acknowledging the safe transportation of approximately 8,350 students daily.

Further proclamations included National School Lunch Week from October 14-18, 2024, which highlights the importance of nutritious meals for students, and Filipino American History Month, recognizing the contributions of Filipino Americans to the community. The board also declared October as LGBT History Month, promoting awareness and discussion of LGBT history in schools, and National Bullying Prevention Month, addressing the significant issue of bullying among students.

Lastly, the board proclaimed October as National Physical Therapy Month, reaffirming its commitment to supporting students with special needs and raising awareness about the benefits of physical therapy. These proclamations reflect the district's ongoing efforts to foster a safe and inclusive educational environment for all students.
