North Shore School District faces urgent education funding crisis

The North Shore School District Board of Directors convened recently to receive updates from district association leaders and community members, emphasizing the importance of civility and respect during public comments. Board members reiterated that discussions must adhere to the published agenda, with any off-agenda topics not being addressed during the meeting.

Holly Munchow, representing the NorthShore Council PTSA, provided updates on upcoming events, including a leader meetup on September 25 and an online Reflections roundtable on September 26, encouraging community involvement in the arts. She also announced the registration for the Washington State PTA Legislative Assembly and highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness programs starting next month.

Robbie Reed, president of the North Shore Education Association, addressed the ongoing education funding crisis, inviting community members to a town hall meeting on October 23. Reed stressed the need for public advocacy to ensure that elected officials prioritize fully funding public education, as mandated by the Washington state constitution. He expressed concerns over rising class sizes and the challenges faced by educators in providing necessary services to students, particularly in special education and bilingual instruction.

Reed called for collective action from the community to address the funding shortfall, noting that public education funding has decreased significantly in recent years. He urged stakeholders to unite in demanding necessary changes to the state funding formula to better support the diverse needs of students in the district.
