Students excel in state assessments despite learning gaps

The Smarter Balanced Assessment data released this week by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction reveals that students in the district continue to perform at proficient or advanced levels, maintaining high performance rates similar to the previous two years across various demographics and program groups. However, the data also highlights persistent learning gaps among certain demographic areas, a trend observed statewide.

Notably, students from low-income backgrounds are outperforming their peers statewide by 12% in English Language Arts (ELA) and math, showcasing early signs of progress in these areas. The superintendent emphasized the importance of recognizing these bright spots while continuing to focus on academic learning and the necessary support systems.

In addition to academic discussions, the meeting included updates on the upcoming 2024 school modernization and construction bond, which will be on the November ballot. Student representatives presented a preview of a promotional video for the bond, outlining key improvements it aims to fund. These include enhanced security measures, the creation of new learning spaces, upgrades to air ventilation systems, and expansions to high school facilities to accommodate growing student populations.

The bond is designed to ensure that all district buildings meet the same standards, providing equitable opportunities for all students regardless of their backgrounds. The district encourages community members to learn more about the bond and to participate in the upcoming vote on November 5th.
