Anchor Bay achieves record graduation rates defying demographic challenges

The superintendent reported an all-time high graduation rate of 95% for 2023, surpassing the state average, which has remained stagnant at just above 80% since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting highlighted a research series by MLive that identified four key demographic indicators influencing student achievement: median family income, percentage of adults with a bachelor's degree, childhood poverty rates, and the prevalence of two-parent households. In Michigan, the median family income stands at approximately $87,000, with Anchor Bay's median income at $111,000, ranking it 58th among the state's 880 districts.

The percentage of adults with a bachelor's degree in Anchor Bay is slightly below the state average at 29%, ranking 147th. Childhood poverty in the district is reported at 7%, significantly lower than the state average of 17%, placing Anchor Bay at 136th. The percentage of two-parent households is 76%, ranking 143rd in the state.

Despite these rankings, the district's performance has been commendable. Anchor Bay achieved the highest student proficiency in Macomb County at 52.3%, outperforming several neighboring districts. The superintendent noted that the district is \"punching above its weight\" in terms of demographics, indicating that the efforts of teachers, students, and families are contributing to this success.
