Historic structures face demolition for new development

In a recent government meeting, the Historic Preservation Board reviewed a request for the demolition of two deteriorating one-story, two-unit buildings located within a designated historic district. Built in 1947, the structures, situated near US Highway 1, have been deemed in poor condition, with significant deterioration noted, particularly at the rear of the buildings.

The applicant, Jacques Chester, presented the case for demolition, stating that there are currently no plans for new construction on the site. However, he emphasized the potential for future development that could enhance the area. The board noted that all criteria for demolition had been met, allowing for the recommendation of approval.

The board expressed the importance of ensuring that any future development aligns with the historic character of the district. The meeting concluded with an invitation for board members to pose questions to both staff and the applicant, indicating a thorough review process before any final decisions are made.
