Residents demand halt to controversial high-rise development

Residents of the Punchbowl Special District voiced strong opposition to a proposed six-story affordable housing project during a recent city council meeting. Michelle Luke, a local resident, emphasized that while the community supports affordable housing, it must align with the neighborhood's character. She criticized the lack of mechanisms to ensure community interests are considered in the planning process, particularly regarding the proposed 16/17 Ala Pai project, which exceeds the height limits set for the area.

Anne Marie Smoak echoed these sentiments, arguing that the current plan lacks explicit protections for community-driven development and fails to address critical safety and accessibility standards. She highlighted the potential negative impacts of the project on local infrastructure and traffic flow, citing inadequate parking and reduced setbacks as significant concerns.
