Community leaders rally churches to boost voter engagement

In a recent meeting of the Harnett County Board of Elections, officials emphasized the importance of community engagement in the electoral process, particularly through local churches. Board members encouraged church leaders to disseminate information about the electoral system and the significance of voter participation, noting that many congregants remain unaware of their voting rights and responsibilities.

The meeting highlighted the successful collaboration with local churches, with plans to expand outreach efforts to four additional congregations—three in Harnett County and one in Wake County. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to voting resources and educate the public about local governance, reinforcing the idea that \"all politics is local.\"

During the discussion, board members reflected on a recent event at Lilyton Grove Church, where they provided voter ID services and checked registrations. The event was well-received, with approximately 10 to 15 IDs issued, showcasing the effectiveness of their outreach strategy.

Additionally, the board is utilizing a daily digest to circulate information about voting and registration, ensuring that residents are informed about available services, including photo ID issuance at the board office. The digest is published three times a week, with plans to feature board meetings and other relevant updates regularly.

The meeting concluded with a reminder of the next gathering scheduled for October 8, which will focus on absentee voting. Board members expressed enthusiasm for continuing their outreach efforts and fostering a more informed electorate in the community.
