Harry Whitehorse Festival draws thousands boosting local tourism

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the successful outcomes of the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival, which took place from June 14 to June 22 at San Damiano. The event, organized by Friends of San Damiano, attracted an estimated 8,097 attendees, primarily from the local area, with about 80% of participants being local residents.

Pat, a representative involved in the festival's planning, highlighted the festival's significance in promoting tourism and community engagement. The event featured 11 sculptors and relied on the efforts of 60 volunteers. Notably, the festival was supported by a joint effort marketing grant from the state of Wisconsin tourism, which facilitated a comprehensive marketing campaign executed by S and B Marketing.

The marketing efforts yielded impressive results, generating over 5 million online impressions and 42,000 clicks on paid advertisements. The festival's dedicated website attracted more than 80,000 visitors, while social media engagement surpassed 100,000 interactions. Additionally, live television coverage reached an estimated 7.8 million viewers, significantly enhancing the festival's visibility.

In terms of economic impact, the festival is estimated to have generated between $104,000 in local spending, with hotel occupancy reflecting 124 to 342 overnight stays across local accommodations. Despite some limitations in tracking exact numbers, the data suggests a positive influence on the local economy and a successful promotional effort for the Monona area.

Officials expressed optimism about future events and the potential for continued growth in tourism, emphasizing the importance of such festivals in fostering community spirit and attracting visitors.
