Residents Demand Action on Airport Expansion Noise Crisis

Residents of Lee's Summit voiced significant concerns regarding the proposed renaming of Lee's Summit Airport to the Greater Kansas City Regional Airport during a recent city council meeting. The discussions highlighted the need for immediate improvements to airport infrastructure, particularly the installation of a traffic control tower and enhancements to airport grounds, before any further expansion or rebranding efforts are undertaken.

One resident, who lives directly north of the runway, expressed alarm over increasing noise pollution and safety risks associated with the airport's expansion. Citing a 2021 master plan, he noted that his neighborhood falls within a high-risk area for noise pollution, exacerbated by the recent introduction of larger jets into the airspace. He described how the frequency of low-flying aircraft has escalated, leading to dangerous encounters between small planes and larger jets, which he has witnessed firsthand.

Another resident echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that courtesy rules regarding flight operations—specifically restrictions on takeoffs and landings during late-night hours—are being ignored. He recounted instances of planes landing as early as 4 AM and flying below the FAA's required altitude, further disrupting the community's quality of life.

Both speakers urged the council to pause any plans for airport expansion and to prioritize the implementation of noise mitigation strategies and operational restrictions. They stressed the importance of addressing these issues to protect residential areas and maintain property values, warning that without action, the appeal of living near the airport could diminish significantly.
